Frequently Asked Questions About Home Medical Supplies
When the time comes when you need to choose the right home medical equipment, it’s often a time of stress and worry. The KC Home Medical Supply staff is here to help patients, caregivers and families find quality, reliable medical supplies that support comfort, safety and independence at home. Below you’ll find answers to some common questions we’re asked about home medical supplies, including wheelchairs, walkers, and hospital beds.
General Home Medical Supplies FAQs
Home medical supplies are products designed to support recovery, mobility and daily living outside of a hospital or rehabilitation setting. These include mobility aids, hospital beds, respiratory equipment, bathroom safety products and other durable medical equipment used at home.
Durable medical equipment (DME) refers to reusable medical products intended for long-term use. Common examples include wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds. These items are designed to support mobility, safety and daily care needs.
Nearly all of our products can be purchased without a prescription, excluding items such as CPAP machines and oxygen concentrators, which require a prescription. Dependent on the store location, a patient prescription may allow certain items to be sold without charging sales tax. KC Home Medical Supply does not contract with insurance companies, and all products are sold private-pay, allowing you to take home the products you need today.
The lifespan of medical equipment varies based on the product type, frequency of use and proper maintenance. Many durable medical equipment items are designed for long-term use when used according to manufacturer guidelines.
Wheelchair FAQs
The best wheelchair depends on the user’s mobility level, home environment and whether the chair will be used independently or with assistance. Manual wheelchairs are commonly used at home, while transport chairs are often used for short outings and appointments. KC Home Medical Supply has trained healthcare staff in each of our three stores that can help you find the right wheelchair for your needs.
Manual wheelchairs typically have larger rear wheels and can be self-propelled or pushed by a caregiver. Transport chairs are lighter, have smaller wheels and are designed to be pushed by another person.
Proper wheelchair fit is important for both comfort and safety. Seat width, seat depth and weight capacity should match the user’s measurements. KC Home Medical Supply’s trained healthcare staff can help recommend an appropriate size based on individual needs.
Many wheelchairs include adjustable features such as armrests, footrests and seat height. Adjustability can help improve comfort and proper positioning for daily use and as mobility level changes. However, some measurements such as the seat width, seat depth and weight capacity vary and are not adjustable, so purchasing the right size of wheelchair is important.
Some wheelchairs are designed for both indoor and outdoor use, depending on wheel type and construction. It’s important to select a wheelchair that matches the user’s typical environment, lifestyle and mobility needs.
Walker & Rollator FAQs
A standard walker is composed of a frame with four legs. Often two wheels are located at the front of the walker, though some models do not have wheels. Walkers provide maximum stability for those needing help bearing their weight while walking. Separately, a rollator includes three to four wheels, hand brakes, and often a built-in seat, making movement easier for users who need balance assistance, but do not require the level of support needed from a walker.
The right walker depends on balance, strength and daily activity level. Adjustable-height walkers can help promote proper posture and stability. Our staff can assist in selecting an appropriate walker.
Most walkers and rollators are height adjustable to ensure proper fit. Correct height adjustment can help improve comfort and reduce strain while walking.
Rollators typically include hand brakes that require some grip strength to operate. Individuals with limited hand strength may benefit from a standard walker instead.
Walkers are generally not designed for stair use. Alternative mobility solutions or home safety modifications may be recommended for navigating stairs safely.
Hospital Bed FAQs
Hospital beds are commonly used by individuals recovering from surgery, managing chronic conditions or requiring assistance with positioning and mobility. A healthcare provider can help determine if having a hospital bed at home is appropriate.
No. Hospital beds may be used for both short-term recovery and long-term care, depending on the patient’s needs and situation. Hospital beds are available for rent at KC Home Medical Supply for short-term needs.
Home hospital beds often include adjustable head and foot sections to support positioning and comfort. Some models may also allow height adjustment to assist with transfers and caregiving.
See types of Hospital Beds
Most home hospital beds are designed to fit through standard doorways and into residential bedrooms. Room layout and space for caregiver access should be considered.
Many hospital beds are compatible with accessories such as side rails, specialized mattresses or overbed tables. Compatibility depends on the specific bed model.
